MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES-Chinese curse

Interesting isn't it? after a run of eight successive wins everything seems fine and dandy at the Arsenal. Closing in on second place, a fully fit squad (almost) and a winnable Semi-final on the horizon. The collapse of Manchester City has helped as has the inevitable downward spiral of that lot up the road but is it a case of what could have been or just being positive that we have something to look forward to as opposed to a meaningless end of season? Chelsea are closing in on an inevitable Championship, and perhaps rightly so as that arrogant manager of theirs had the funds and the where with all to strengthen their spine considerably during the summer. It has to be said though that Chelsea will be one of those Champions that no one really cares about or likes. Most Champions have an air of something special and a grudging respect for what it takes to achieve such a distinction but Chelsea, the club, the owner, the manager and a large percentage of the fans are eminently di...

SCHADENFREUDE AND SATISFACTION

All in all its been a jolly satisfying week.  Beating Manchester United at Old Trafford to progress in the FA Cup and destroy their chances of silverware, Chelsea suffering an embarrassing night against PSG and dropping points to Southampton, Man City losing allowing us to narrow the gap between us to a solitary point have all made this a week of pleasure and no small amount of Schadenfreude, obviously it's always nice to see spurs lose but the three points United gained is not good, but as I say: spurs lost...oh and there was also the small matter of our victory against West Ham United and Sam Allardyce: three unanswered goals that help our Goal Difference and possibly give us a boost for Tuesday night. Yes its been a good week and often its easy to forget the good times and appreciate them. The worst of times are not the apocalypse and the best of times are not an epiphany with chocolate cake, Caviar and free flowing Champagne. This week has been, to put it simply, a lo...

FLYING BOOTS AND WEMBLEY SUITS

The Premier League title is a pipe dream, The League Cup has gone on the oligarch’s mantelpiece and progress in The Champions League seems unlikely which leaves retention of The FA Cup as an opportunity for genuine glory. Let’s be clear: finishing in a league position that qualifies for Champion’s League Football is not glory, it’s commerce for a club that have no chance of winning the thing under the present manager. So Monday night is the biggest game of the season so far for The Arsenal. Victory not only takes us one step nearer to a fitting for those Wembley suits, but eliminates the threat of a United side that, although a shadow of former versions has a habit of beating us even when being outplayed. Of course Manchester United v Arsenal at Old Trafford once was a must see event full of drama and key to the destination of the title. That both teams have declined since those halcyon days should not distract from the meaning of this particular fixture. Van Gaal and We...

A GAME OF THREE THIRDS

A third of Arsenal's League games have been won.  In a third of Arsenal's League games points  have been dropped. Tonight we begin the final third and if we replicate the form of the first two thirds we will accumulate a further 21 points which will leave us with 63 points; not a significant amount is it?  Bookies generally go on form so to prove them wrong  the objective is clear: we need to up our game significantly. Let's start tonight with a towering victory because, cups cup aside, we may very well need to rely on goal difference  come May 24th.

AFC FA CUP

The FA Cup Winners 2014-2005-2003-2002-1998- 1993-1979-1971-1950-1936-1930 The FA Cup is a trophy that we have a history of winning so don't let the naysayers who pronounce the trophy as devalued have the upper hand. Its a historic trophy, perhaps the most celebrated in the world, and to win it is an achievement as each season the options for securing success are limited and certainly European success is currently beyond us as is a triumph in the league. So we should enjoy a cup run and the possibility of knocking out a loathed opponent here, a plucky underdog there and a return trip to Wembley. The next bridge to cross is in the shape of Brighton & Hove Albion so let's hope we get the right result on the sunny South Coast. An Historic club like ours should want to win a historic trophy such as the FA Cup, after all it's something of a tradition.
